Update on St Helen’s Church Tower Restoration

St Helen’s Church has been awarded £234,681 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support essential restoration work to the church tower and to mark the 75th anniversary of Trowell being named the Festival of Britain village.

The project will deliver important repairs to the historic Grade II* listed tower, including work to the spiral staircase, stabilisation of stonework, and reinstatement of the bell-ringing system. Improvements will also include energy-efficient lighting and the creation of a biodiverse memorial garden to provide a peaceful space for reflection.

Residents may have noticed that the church clock is currently not operating. This has been temporarily stopped to help protect the tower during the restoration works and to avoid any risk of damage while work is taking place in close proximity to the clock mechanism.

In addition to the restoration works, there will be a programme of community activities, including guided tours, talks, workshops and opportunities for schools, volunteers and local groups to get involved.

This project represents a significant investment in preserving an important part of Trowell heritage while creating new opportunities for the community to engage with its history.
