Roadworks Update – Surface Dressing Preparation Works in Trowell

Published: 3 July 2026 Trowell Parish Council has been notified by Via East Midlands, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, that preparation works for this year’s Surface Dressing Programme will shortly be taking place on a number of roads within Trowell. Surface dressing is a planned highway maintenance treatment designed to protect road surfaces, improve skid resistance and extend the life of the road. By carrying out preventative maintenance, more extensive repairs can often be avoided in the future.

What to expect

The programme is completed in several stages:

Preparation Patching

Damaged sections of the road surface will be repaired and prepared before surface dressing takes place. During this stage, road studs may also be removed. These works are generally undertaken under night-time road closures to help minimise disruption.

Surface Dressing

A layer of bitumen emulsion and stone chippings is applied to the road surface. These works are normally carried out during the day and roads may be closed for short periods while the treatment is being applied.

Surface Dressing Encapsulation

Once the initial treatment has been completed, a further layer of bitumen emulsion is applied to lock the stone chippings into place and seal the road surface.

Road Markings and Road Stud Installation

The final stage of the programme involves reinstating road markings and reflective road studs, completing the maintenance process.

Please be aware

As surface dressing is weather dependent, planned dates may change if conditions are unsuitable. Nottinghamshire County Council updates the programme on a daily basis throughout the works.
