Broxtowe Bestows Highest Honour on Four Community Champions

Four outstanding individuals who have devoted years of service to the people of Broxtowe have been admitted as Freemen of Broxtowe, the highest honour the Borough Council can bestow.

The special ceremony, held on 28 January, recognised exceptional contributions to community life, culture, charity and public service.

Among those honoured was Richard Pratt, aged 82, who has dedicated more than 30 years to supporting young people through scouting, patient involvement and other community roles. A lifelong volunteer, Richard’s calm leadership and compassion have positively shaped the lives of generations of young people across Broxtowe.

Also admitted was Mark Preston, widely known by his alter-ego Miss Zandra. For over 25 years, Mark has raised more than £520,000 for local charities across Eastwood and surrounding areas, donating every penny raised through his performances to support children, families and community causes.

Dr Peter Robinson was recognised for his longstanding commitment to the Beeston and District Civic Society, where his leadership has helped raise awareness of Beeston’s heritage, promote civic pride and make local history accessible to a wider audience through talks, guided walks and community initiatives.

The final honour was awarded to Ruth Hyde OBE, former Chief Executive of Broxtowe Borough Council, who retired in September. Ruth was recognised for her strategic yet compassionate leadership over many years, shaping economic growth, regeneration, community safety and cohesion, and championing equality and inclusion across the borough and beyond.

The Freedom of the Borough recognises individuals whose service has made a lasting and meaningful impact on the community. Each of this year’s recipients exemplifies the values of dedication, leadership and care for others that underpin Broxtowe’s strong sense of community.
